VICTORIA BACH FESTIVAL
VICTORIA BACH FESTIVAL. The Victoria Bach Festival, an annual music festival each June that celebrates the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and other classical masterworks, was founded in 1976 under the direction of Dr. David Urness in Victoria, Texas, and originally sponsored through the University of Houston-Victoria.
The weeklong festival was under the artistic direction of Craig Hella Johnson from 1992 to 2015. Joey Martin and Michelle Schumann later joined the artistic team. Craig Hella Johnson is a Grammy-nominated conductor for his work with the vocal ensemble Conspirare, a collaborating partner of the festival. After Johnson’s departure, Michelle Schumann served as interim artistic director while a search was conducted to fill the director position beginning in 2016. A mix of orchestral, choral, and chamber music is performed at various venues around Victoria, showcasing local and nationally-acclaimed musicians. Performances range from intimate chamber concerts to large symphonic performances to family-friendly outdoor concerts. The festival strives to be inclusive and accessible by offering post-concert chats and open rehearsals.
