INSTITUTE FOR THE STUDY OF EARTH AND MAN
INSTITUTE FOR THE STUDY OF EARTH AND MAN. The Institute for the Study of Earth and Man, located on the Southern Methodist University campus in Dallas, supports university research in anthropology, geology, and related fields. It was organized in 1966 by geologist William B. Heroy, Sr., and received a charter from the state the same year. Through Heroy's personal efforts and assistance from the National Science Foundation the institute's N. L. Heroy Science Hall was completed in 1968; ISEM then donated the building to SMU. The institute is a private organization administered by its own board of trustees and officers and supported by endowment funds, gifts, and corporate sponsors. In the 1990s the physical plant covered 86,000 square feet and housed fifty-six professors, lecturers, and researchers, with a supporting staff of forty-four. The ISEM Library held 10,000 volumes, concentrating mainly on anthropology and geology. ISEM cooperates with many institutions to sponsor research and industrial conferences, symposia, and briefings, which are attended by academic, industrial, and government leaders. It places particular emphasis on programs related to global energy concerns.
