WATSON'S FERRY (PANOLA COUNTY)

WATSON'S FERRY (PANOLA COUNTY). Watson's Ferry (at 31° 59' N, 94° 1' W) was the name given to a late 1830s/early 1840s ferry crossing on the right bank on the Sabine River located just north of Logansport, Louisiana. This was the crossing known to Gen. Manuel de Mier y Terán in his 1828 expedition to the Sabine as Polvado's Ferry. By the time the Joint Boundary Commission arrived in the area in 1840–41 to establish the boundary between the United States and the Republic of Texas, the name had been changed to Watson's Ferry. The road from Nacogdoches that Terán used to reach the Sabine is clearly denoted on the Commission's maps as passing through the renamed ferry site. At the time the boundaries of Harrison County were altered to create the Panola Judicial District in 1841, this ferry marked the southeastern corner of the county. This same location was used to mark the southeastern corner of Panola County when it was created in March 1846.
