PUMMEL PEAK. Pummel (Pommel) Peak is located at Panther Junction in the Chisos Mountains, three miles southwest of Big Bend National Park headquarters, in southern Brewster County (at 29°17' N, 103°13' W). With an elevation of 6,620 feet above sea level, it rises 2,900 feet above the park headquarters. The area's shallow, stony soils support Douglas fir, aspen, Arizona cypress, maple, ponderosa pine, and madrone. The peak was reportedly named by federal surveyors Arthur A. Stiles and Stuart T. Penick in 1902.
