INDIAN MESA. Indian Mesa is eight miles northeast of Bakersfield and south of the Pecos River in eastern Pecos County; its summit (at 30°56' N, 102°11' W) reaches an elevation of 3,100 feet above sea level. The mesa is flanked by Interstate Highway 10 on the south and Farm Road 305 on the northeast. The area is characterized by mesquite, juniper brush, lotebush, shin oak, and prickly pear growing in soils that vary from deep and loamy to shallow, calcareous, and stony. The landforms range from flatlands with local deep and dense dissections to undulating hills.
