CLEAR CREEK (Waller County). Clear Creek, also known as Fish Pond Creek, rises eight miles northeast of Hempstead in northern Waller County (at 30°11' N, 95°59' W) and runs twenty-two miles southwest to its mouth on the Brazos River, six miles south of Hempstead (at 30°00' N, 96°05' W). It forms the border between Waller and Austin counties and is fed by over forty tributaries, including Ponds Creek, Three Mile Creek, and the overflow from Becker Lake. Clear Creek crosses rolling East Texas timberlands to gently undulating coastal area surfaced by sandy and clay loams that support pines, oaks, grasses, and crops. During the Civil War both Camp Clear Creek and Camp Clever were located on Clear Creek. Other Confederate camps near the creek included Camp Carter, Camp Hempstead, Camp Herbert, and Camp Groce. Because of its location in Texas and its rail facilities provided by the Houston and Texas Central Railroad, Hempstead served as an intermediate organizing point for soldiers coming from Central and West Texas. The camps were built near Clear Creek because it provided water.
