ANTELOPE DRAW (Brewster County). Antelope Draw begins about twelve miles east of Alpine in northern Brewster County (at 30°22' N, 103°34' W) and runs northeast for eighteen miles to its mouth on Coyanosa Draw (at 30°39' N, 103°20' W) in western Pecos County. The desert grassland vegetation along the draw includes blue grama and other gramas, tobosa grass, bluestems, and scattered clumps of sacahuiste. Desert scrub has invaded the heavily grazed area, however; plants such as lechuguilla, allthorn, creosote bush, and mesquite are very much in evidence. Antelope Draw is among a number of land features in this region named for the pronghorn antelope, which were at one time extremely abundant here. Although pronghorns were hunted almost out of existence in the late 1800s, their numbers have recovered somewhat, so that they may again be seen grazing along the course of Antelope Draw.
