TERRELL, FREDERICK (1856–1940). Frederick Terrell, civic leader, son of Charles Milton and Sarah (Speake) Terrell, was born in Lafayette, Indiana, on March 31, 1856. He attended Earlham College in Indiana before moving to San Antonio in 1867, when he began study at the German-English School there. He also attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where he took an A.B. degree in 1876, and Harvard University, where he received his M.D. degree in 1881. He returned to San Antonio that same year and practiced medicine until around 1900. He married Marion Clement of Boston on September 6, 1882; they had one daughter. Terrell was an alderman in San Antonio in 1900. He was elected mayor in 1903 and later served as president of the school board. He was also director of the Carnegie Library, chairman of the Fireman's and Policeman's Pension Board (1925–39), chairman of the Selective Service Board of Bexar County in 1917–18, and a member of the state and national medical associations. He became vice president of the City National Bank of San Antonio in 1906 and later was president and chairman of the board. He was also chairman of the board of directors of the City-Central Bank and Trust Company. He died on March 11, 1940.
