SIMONDS, HORACE B. (1823–1882). Horace B. Simonds (originally Simons and also spelled Simmonds), judge, schoolteacher, county official, and state representative, was born in New York, in 1823. He was the son of Hezekiah Simons. Upon reaching adulthood, Simonds relocated to Wisconsin, where he married Serenna Louisa Walworth in Monroe, Green County, on October 15, 1848. Probably after 1854 Simonds immigrated with his family to Texas and settled in Hunt County, where he farmed to the southwest of Greenville near Haw Branch and also established an elementary school. During this time he changed his name from Simons to Simonds. The 1860 census listed Simonds as a teacher in Greenville in Hunt County. Four children (three sons and a daughter) lived in the household, and the three oldest, ranging in age from ten to six, were born in Illinois. He was among the prosperous citizens of Hunt County and reported $10,000 in personal and real estate property. Simonds took an active role in community affairs. He served six terms as district clerk from 1855 to 1867. In 1866 he won election as representative for Hunt County to the House of the Eleventh Texas Legislature. He served from August 13, 1866, to February 7, 1870, and was on the Militia Committee and Roads, Bridges and Ferries Committee. In the early 1870s he oversaw numerous land transactions in Hunt County, and in 1878 and 1880 he served as county judge. Simonds died in Greenville in Hunt County on January 24, 1882.
