REDMAN, WILLIAM COLUMBUS
REDMAN, WILLIAM COLUMBUS (1853–1924). William Columbus Redman, journalist, son of William and Mary Ann Redman, was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on April 3, 1853. The family moved to Texas in 1865 and farmed in Coryell County until 1875, when they moved to Mason County. Redman helped on his father's farm, drove cattle up the trail, and became a printer. He married Annie Laura Wilhelm at Mason on October 2, 1878, and they became the parents of eight children. In the summer of 1882 he moved to what was then San Angela, now San Angelo. He and his brother, Jasper Redman, bought a printing plant and established a weekly newspaper, the Menardville Monitor, at Menardville in 1888. The plant was later moved to Fort McKavett, where Columbus Redman established the McKavett Breeze, which existed only a week or two. He then loaded his printing plant on a wagon and moved it to Paint Rock, where he established the Concho County Herald. In later years he was connected with newspapers at Llano, Brownwood, Comanche, Blanket, Dublin, McCaulley, O'Brien, and Bronte. In the fall of 1923 he moved to Clyde, Callahan County, and engaged in fruit growing. The pioneer West Texas journalist died in Abilene on July 24, 1924.
