MILLER, STEWARD ALEXANDER
MILLER, STEWARD ALEXANDER (1805–1893). Steward Alexander Miller, pioneer settler, soldier, and legislator, was born in Campbell County, Virginia, on July 4, 1805. He was orphaned at an early age, learned the tanning trade, and later taught school for a time before immigrating to Texas in 1839. He settled in Crockett, where he studied law with James Carr. In 1843 Miller joined Col. Jacob Snively's expedition and kept a day-by-day account of the venture. During the expedition Miller acquired the title of colonel, which he continued to use until his death. He returned to Virginia in 1850 and on June 24, 1851, married Rebecca F. Whiten, with whom he had ten children. He represented Houston County in the First and Second legislatures and was a member of the state Senate in 1851, 1854, and 1861. After the adoption of the Constitution of 1876 Miller was elected Houston county judge, a post he held for two terms. He was a member of the Texas Veterans Association. Miller died in Crockett on March 27, 1893, and was buried in the family cemetery on Sheridan Hill, though his remains were later moved to Glenwood Cemetery in Crockett. In 1973 a state historical marker was placed at his grave.
