MCCABE, LLOYD HENRY
MCCABE, LLOYD HENRY (1847–1930). Lloyd Henry (Mac) McCabe, county official and delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1875, was born in Troy, New York, on December 21, 1847, the child of a mixed-race marriage. He studied at Troy public schools and may have acquired skills in basketmaking. He moved to Texas in 1870, worked for a time in the Galveston customhouse, and apparently taught school somewhere on the Brazos River. In 1875 McCabe lived in Fort Bend County and was selected as one of six black delegates to the state constitutional convention, where he served on the Education Committee. He was county district clerk from 1874 to 1882. McCabe, a resident of Richmond, also worked as a farmer. Some sources indicate that his wife, Melissa, was the daughter of a former slave. The United States Census Bureau reported that the couple had ten children in 1900. McCabe died on March 26, 1930.
