MCCAN, CLAUDE K.
MCCAN, CLAUDE K. (1899–1975). Claude K. McCan, rancher and cattle breeder, son of James Ferdinand and Emily (McFaddin) McCan, was born in Victoria, Texas, in 1899. His father was a landscape artist, and his mother was a daughter of rancher James A. McFaddin. He was educated in the Victoria public schools and the Tome School in Maryland, as well as the University of Texas. He married Sue Ragsdale in 1923. They had two children. McCan was a trustee of the McFaddin estate. He assumed management of the McFaddin Ranch in 1924 and continued the breeding program of his grandfather, J. A. McFaddin, and his uncle, Al McFaddin. After thirty years of experimentation he developed a Hereford-Brahman cross that breeds true and thrives in the Gulf Coast region; his cattle have been called "McCan Cattle." McCan was also a partner in Welder and McCan, a steer brokerage firm, and a member of the board of directors of Victoria National Bank. He served as president of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association from 1942 to 1944 and was chairman of the Production and Marketing Administration for Texas in the administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower. He died in 1975.
