GUTSCH, MILTON RIETOW
GUTSCH, MILTON RIETOW (1885–1967). Milton Rietow Gutsch, historian, teacher, and administrator, was born on March 7, 1885, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the son of Louis and Laura (Rietow) Gutsch. In 1904 he entered the University of Wisconsin, where he received a B.A. degree in 1908, an M.A. degree in 1909, and a Ph.D. degree in 1916, specializing in medieval history. On August 29, 1918, he married Mary Mayfield of Austin. He began his career at the University of Texas in 1912 as an instructor in British history. He became adjunct professor in 1916, associate professor in 1922, and professor in 1927.
Early in his career at the university Gutsch became noted for his ability as a teacher and administrator. He held these administrative positions until poor health forced his retirement in 1951. He wrote several articles and published in 1955, with H. Bailey Carroll, Texas History Theses: A Check List of the Theses and Dissertations Relating to Texas History Accepted at the University of Texas, 1893–1951. He also compiled Texas war records of World War I and served as managing editor of the Texas History Teachers Bulletin from 1912 to 1920. Gutsch died in Austin on January 1, 1967.
