GILMORE, CLARENCE EDGAR

GILMORE, CLARENCE EDGAR (1872–1929). Clarence Edgar Gilmore, newspaperman and legislator, the son of Wiley Coleman and Sarah J. (Monroe) Gilmore, was born on a farm near Canton, Texas, on October 26, 1872. He farmed, taught school, worked in stores, and entered the newspaper business in 1894. Later he became half owner of the Wills Point Chronicle and was connected with the Wichita Falls Times and Canton Herald. After attending the law school of the University of Texas in the summer of 1912, he entered the practice of law. He was a member of the Thirtieth, Thirty-first, and Thirty-second legislatures. He was also general attorney of the Texas Press Association and its president in 1909. Gilmore served on committees to investigate the state prison system. He was a member of the Railroad Commission from 1918 until his death and served as its chairman beginning in 1924. He was a Mason and a member of the Knights of Pythias. Gilmore married Lena McKain on March 18, 1897, and was the father of two children. He died on October 10, 1929.
