DEMORSE, LESLIE CAZNEAU
DEMORSE, LESLIE CAZNEAU (1841–1902). Leslie Cazneau DeMorse, state representative and county official, was born in Austin, Texas, on August 18, 1841, the son of Lodiska C. (Woolridge) and Charles DeMorse. The elder DeMorse was a prominent citizen during the Texas Republic and early statehood, being at various times a noted lawyer, politician, soldier, and journalist. DeMorse himself was raised in Texas and settled at Bowie County prior to the 1870s. During the Civil War he served as a staff lieutenant. In 1873 he won election as representative for District Seven—comprised of Cass, Bowie, Marion, Cherokee, Houston, Trinity, and Angelina counties—to the Fourteenth Texas Legislature. DeMorse continued his public service following his return to Bowie County, serving as postmaster for New Boston in 1877. In 1882 he was listed in the Texarkana business directory as the president of the Bank of Texarkana. Leslie C. DeMorse died in Bowie County on May 6, 1902, and was buried there at Rose Hill Cemetery.
