DEAN, JOHN M. (1859–1920). John M. Dean, legislator, banker, and teacher, the son of Robert B. and Amanda (Burress) Dean, was born in Anderson County, South Carolina, on November 17, 1859. His father was a planter. Dean came to Texas in 1881, farmed for a time, and then taught at towns in Smith County and at Ben Wheeler. In 1886 he graduated from Sam Houston Normal School (now Sam Houston State University) at Huntsville. In December of that year he married C. Ellis; they had nine children. Dean moved to Grand Saline in 1906 and in July 1907 aided in the founding of the Citizens National Bank, later incorporated as the First State Bank, which he served as first president. Dean was elected to the state legislature in 1898 and 1900. He served as a delegate to the state Democratic conventions of 1898 and 1914. He was a Mason and a Baptist. Sometime before 1920 he moved to Oklahoma, where he died.
