COIT, DANIEL PIERCE
COIT, DANIEL PIERCE (?–1846?). Daniel Pierce Coit, judge and congressman, was born in Vermont. He had moved to Texas by 1835 and settled on a league at Tarquenton's Prairie in what would later become northern Liberty County. He was elected chief justice of Liberty County in 1836 and also served as president of the county board of land commissioners. He was appointed to guard Mexican officers imprisoned at Liberty from October 10, 1836, to January 6, 1837. He acted as vice president of a local organization that celebrated the first anniversary of the battle of San Jacinto. He was elected secretary of the Liberty township in 1837 and represented the county at the Fourth Congress of the republic from November 1839 to February 1840. Coit had married Elizabeth Hardin by 1835. He had three daughters, all born in Texas. Tax rolls indicate that he owned two town lots and twelve workhorses in 1840 and had title to over 8,000 acres of land. He had apparently died by 1846; his widow survived two subsequent husbands.
