BARZYNSKI, VINCENT (1838–1899). Vincent Barzynski, priest, son of Joseph and Mary (Sroczynska) Barzynski, was born at Sulislawice, Sandomir, Russian Poland, on September 20, 1838. His early education was private; he entered the diocesan seminary at Lubin and was ordained a Catholic priest on October 28, 1861. After being forced to leave his country for participating in a military uprising in 1863, Father Barzynski traveled for two years until he reached Rome, where he joined the newly formed Congregation of the Resurrection. Bishop Claude Marie Dubuis of Galveston, Texas, solicitous for the spiritual welfare of the Poles at such settlements in Texas as Panna Maria, San Antonio, Bandera, St. Hedwig, and Yorktown, invited the Resurrectionist Fathers to Texas. In 1866 Barzynski and two companions arrived. Laboring particularly as pastor in San Antonio and St. Hedwig, Barzynski did illustrious work before he was transferred to Chicago in 1874 to enter upon the great work of his life, the building of St. Stanislaus Church and school. He influenced the entire Catholic Polish population of Chicago and became a commanding figure in the history of his countrymen in America. He died in Chicago on May 2, 1899.
