WAGNER, TEXAS. Wagner is on Farm Road 903 seven miles northwest of Greenville in northwest Hunt County. Its settlement occurred in the late 1880s. From its inception Wagner has served area farmers as a community center. Its population has exceeded fifty only once in its history. The settlement had a post office from 1890 to 1904. Wagner was the birthplace of major league pitcher Monty Stratton, whose attempted comeback following the loss of a leg led to The Stratton Story, starring James Stewart. The population of Wagner stood at forty-five through most of the 1930s and 1940s. Since 1948 there have been no population statistics available.
