NEWELL, JOHN D. (1804-1875). John D. Newell, early settler, planter, and legislator, was born in North Carolina in 1804. He moved to Texas in 1830 and in 1832 took part in the battle of Velasco. He represented Matagorda County at the Consultation in 1835. Newell lived in Austin during the 1850s but by 1860 had moved to Fort Bend County, where he had a large cotton plantation. He died at Richmond in December 1875.
