GARRETT, ROBERT CALVIN (1826–1890). Robert Calvin Garrett, farmer, banker, Confederate soldier, and state representative, was born in Tennessee on September 12, 1826, the son of David Garrett. Garrett immigrated to Texas in the early 1850s, settled in Harrison County, and established himself as a farmer. Here he married Lucy J. Long on May 3, 1855. This couple had one son and two daughters.
On September 23, 1863, during the Civil War Garrett volunteered for service in the Confederate Army, enlisting as a private in Company F of the Second Texas Cavalry Regiment. He served with this unit through the remainder of the war and was discharged at the general surrender of Texas forces in May 1865. Garrett returned to Harrison County, and in 1866 he won election as representative for the county to the Eleventh Texas Legislature. During the 1870s Garrett established himself as a banker. Robert Calvin Garrett died in Harrison County on February 12, 1890, and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Marshall.
