DALLAS HERALD. The Dallas Herald was established in 1849 by James W. Latimer and William Wallace. The two purchased the Paris, Texas, Times that summer and moved it to Dallas in the fall. The paper may have originally been named the Dallas Cedar Snag, but by December it was the Herald. Wallace retired in 1850, and Latimer became the sole owner and editor. In 1854 John W. Swindells became co-owner and in 1859, upon Latimer's death, became owner and editor of the paper. On June 21, 1873, the paper was renamed Dallas Weekly Herald and published by J. W. Swindells and Company. Later that year the publisher was listed as the Dallas Herald Printing Company, with Swindells as president. In 1874 the company began publication of a daily edition called the Dallas Daily Herald,printed every morning except Monday and sold at an annual subscription rate of ten dollars. The rate for the weekly was two dollars annually. After March 8, 1877, J. L. Bartow was listed as head of the Herald,but Swindells continued as agent and correspondent. In 1879 the paper appeared under the new ownership of P. S. Pfouts, J. E. Elliott, and W. L. Hall, and that firm continued both the daily and weekly edition until December 3, 1885, when the paper was bought out and absorbed by the Dallas Morning News. See also DALLAS TIMES HERALD.
