TSHA 111th Annual Meeting Program

Click for larger image The TSHA held its 111th Annual Meeting at the Crowne Plaza Riverwalk Hotel in San Antonio March 8-10, 2007, hosting forty-eight Texas history presentations by leading authorities on Texas politics, the Civil War, women and cattle trails, Tejano influences on the Texas frontier, wind power, women’s health, archeology, architecture, the Cotton Bowl, the latest on the Yellow Rose, and more.

Thank you for making this Annual Meeting the greatest ever! Highlights will be posted soon.

After a full day of sessions on Thursday, March 8, start the festivities with the "Welcome to San Antonio" reception at the Witte Museum and a private viewing of the exhibit, "A Wild and Vivid Land: Stories of South Texas." Following the Witte Museum tour, buses will return to the Crowne Plaza for the Awards Banquet. There you can join fellow history enthusiasts in officially recognizing significant contributors to the study of Texas history.

Begin Friday, March 9 with the Book Lovers & Texana Collectors Breakfast featuring Red McCombs in an engaging talk, "Tell Me More about Texas." At noon, Elizabeth Crook will address the attendees of the Women in Texas History Luncheon.

After the Friday afternoon sessions, stroll along the San Antonio River Walk to the Presidential Reception honoring incoming president Frank de la Teja. Enjoy appetizers, music, and friends under a canopy of trees in the garden at the Southwest School of Art & Craft. The Presidential Banquet, with Larry McNeill speaking, will follow in the chapel of the Southwest School of Art & Craft. Conclude the meeting on Saturday morning March 10 with a breakfast, followed by the final sessions offering more opportunities to learn in the company of fellow Texans and historians.

This year, joint sessions with other historical organizations include the Texas Catholic Historical Society, Texas Oral History Association, the Texas State Historical Commission, the Texas Baptist Historical Society, Texas Archeological Society, and Texas Parks & Wildlife. Also scheduled are the Handbook of Texas workshop, the Quarterly and publications workshop, the business meeting, and various committee meetings. In addition, the Webb Society Annual Meeting will take place Friday with chapter reports and the presentation of four papers.

Throughout the meeting additional opportunities abound. Join in the lively bidding at the Texana Silent Auction, which will include rare books, maps, and artifacts. More recent publications by some of the region’s leading publishers of history will be for sale throughout the meeting in the exhibit hall.

We wish to thank the 2007 Program Committee for their hard work in compiling a wide-ranging and diverse collection of sessions. Chaired by Ty Cashion, the committee comprised the following members: Light T. Cummins, Karen T. Wiggins, David Blanke, Emilio Zamora, Marise McDermott, Mike Parrish, Paul Spellman, Elizabeth Hayes Turner, Gene Preuss, Yvonne D. Frear, and T. Lindsay Baker.

Silent Auction of Texana

A long-standing highlight of the annual meeting, the Texana Silent Auction presents a great source for superb books, maps, manuscripts, and objects. The money raised directly benefits the educational programs that the Association sponsors throughout the state. We are currently seeking donations to the Silent Auction. If you are interested in donating to the Silent Auction, please contact David Degnan at (512) 471-1525 or ddegnan@austin.utexas.edu.
