Welcome to Corpus Christi

Make your plans now to attend the 106th annual meeting of the TSHA on March 7-9, 2002, at the Omni Corpus Christi Hotel Bayfront. This will be our first meeting in Corpus Christi, and it coincides with the celebration of the city's sesquicentennial of incorporation. It was in 1839 that Henry Lawrence Kinney and his partner William P. Aubrey established a trading post on the west shore of Corpus Christi Bay, which had become a small village by the mid-1840s. General Zachary Taylor's army camped nearby in September 1845 as Texas prepared to join the union. (A beautiful new park has been designed for the site of the army's encampment and will soon be built.) The town became county seat of the newly formed Nueces County in 1846 and was first incorporated that year, but no public officials were elected and the incorporation was repealed. The city was finally reincorporated on February 16, 1852.

As you can see from a perusal of this program, chairman Bruce Glasrud of Sul Ross State University and the program committee have organized an excellent group of 35 sessions that cover the gamut of historical interest in Texas. Of special interest will be a session on the history of our host city, which is scheduled for 9:00 A.M. on Saturday. In addition, other sessions will include such areas as horsewomen in Texas and on the Spanish frontier, ranch life in the Panhandle, and the Victorian courthouses of Texas.

Two great tours are scheduled: the first is the Presidential Reception, which will be held onboard Captain Clark's Flagship as it cruises beautiful Corpus Christi Bay on Thursday evening; the second is a Saturday afternoon tour of Kingsville and the fabled King Ranch. The tour begins with a visit to the King Ranch Museum, includes a tour of downtown Kingsville and the ranch's saddle shop, and concludes with a barbeque dinner at the cowboy camphouse on the ranch.

We have four great banquet speakers scheduled: Caroline Castillo Crimm will speak on "Tempest in a Teacup: Petra Vela de Vidal Kenedy and the Sources" at the Women and Texas History Luncheon on Thursday. At the Awards Luncheon on Friday, David G. McComb will talk about his new biography of his former mentor and TSHA director Joe B. Frantz, "A Conversation with Joe B. Frantz." TSHA president Jerry Thompson has chosen the United States war with Mexico as the context for his Presidential Banquet talk on Friday evening, "Winfield Scott's Army of Occupation as Pioneer Alpinists: Epic Ascents of Popocatepetl and Citlaltepetl." At the recommendation of the ad hoc committee of the TSHA, we have changed the structure of the meeting on Saturday. Instead of a luncheon, there will be a breakfast, and Ronald L. Davis will present a lively discussion of "John Wayne and the Making of The Alamo" from his new biography of Wayne.

In addition to the sessions, speeches, and tours, there will be the usual live and silent auctions of Texas books, art, and artifacts; book signings; and displays by the leading publishers of Texas history. We hope you will plan to join us March 7-9 in Corpus Christi for what promises to be three rich days of history, stimulating conversation, and good fun.

Ron Tyler
Director
